“This guy is smashing it ... we're very very excited about him." - BBC Introducing (3CR)
"Fantastic voice... talented songwriter... truly authentic sound. One to watch" - Open Mic UK.
Alex Crittenden is a singer-songwriter based in London. The title track of his debut EP "Can We Just Talk?", with live demos of four original songs, gained 31,000 listeners on Spotify in its first week.
After posting covers on his Instagram account, his first live gig was in late 2017 in a tiny social club with an audience of about 40. He was talent spotted by The Voice Kids UK and after reaching the last 60 out of 9,000 acts decided that perhaps he should take some singing lessons. His second live gig was a blind audition for The Voice Kids UK in February 2018, although none of the judges turned for him.
Throughout the summer of 2018 he built up his live experience with gigs for Westfield Presents, performing at Shepherds Bush and Stratford in east London and developing new original songs as well as extending his repertoire of covers, all with original arrangements.
At the Mayor of London's Gigs10 busking competition he won the Gibson Prize for the most promising finalist, presented by Newton Faulkner. Since then he has performed at Dingwalls, Lock 17, the Bobby Moore Room at Wembley Stadium, and numerous official busking locations in London including Camden Market and Hays Galleria.
For Open Mic UK he debuted three further original songs which are not on his EP - "Spare Seconds," "Four Letter Words" and "Me Neither". In January 2019 he reached the national final, performing "Me Neither" at Indigo at the O2.
In a live session for BBC Music Introducing (3CR) in April 2019 he performed acoustic versions of "Me Neither" and "Four Letter Words," as well as a version of "Can We Just Talk," the live demo of which had reached 100,000 streams on Spotify that month.
His songwriting influences include Nate Ruess, James Bay, Tom Misch, Jordan Rakei, Lewis Watson and Chris Martin, and he has covered songs ranging from Fleetwood Mac and the Arctic Monkeys to The Killers and The 1975, always with his own unique arrangements and broadly in the genre area of indie-folk.
He posts snippets of new original songs and covers on his Instagram account @ac.wave where he replies to as many DMs as he can. He's planning more releases on Spotify in summer 2019, where you can follow to be among the first to hear, or join his mailing list at https://www.alexcrittenden.info
