Post-rock duo Belle Sonder is Norwegian indie-folk singer/songwriter and guitarist Eirik Bøen Gravdal (Digvalley) and British multi-instrumentalist and producer Liam Cook. The Anglo-Nordic two-piece first formed in Liverpool in 2014 during university studies, bonding over a love for bands like Mogwai, Bon Iver, Bombay Bicycle Club and more. Whilst living together, Eirik and Liam began playing around with ideas for songs, before writing their first track 'Sonder' in early 2014. Belle Sonder went on self-release 'Sonder / Anchorage' the same year.
Following university, Eirik returned to his homeland Norway, but Belle Sonder continued to write music remotely, convening in Norway/UK at least once a year for sessions. The duo met in Spring 2016 to write their second release 'Spine / Desinent' and then again in Autumn 2017 to write their first EP (released in Spring 2018).
The band's latest sessions took place in Autumn 2018 and saw the duo begin work on their debut album. A collection of nine songs written over several months, Belle Sonder's debut album sees the band continue to take an experimental approach to songwriting and composition, drawing inspiration from environmental influences to create an ethereal sound, but this time incorporating electronica and indie-pop influences to form a distinctive sound.
Likened to artists such as Mogwai, Bon Iver, Polica and Beach House, Belle Sonder just released their first single from the upcoming album, entitled 'Supple'.
'Supple' revolves around lead vocalist Eirik Bøen Gravdal’s alluring vocal motif, pulsating synth and delicate acoustic guitar. ‘Supple’ is built upon Belle Sonder’s post-rock foundation, following a progressive song structure that ebbs and flows before culminating in a rich, ethereal final chorus that blends acoustic and electronic instrumentation to powerful effect.
Belle Sonder's debut album is due for release later this summer, ahead of a debut live performance at Manchester Psych Fest on 30th August, alongside Courtney Barnett, Temples, Goat Girl and many more.
With significant radio airplay and synchronisation in Norway and extensive music blog coverage, including coverage from For The Rabbits, Sacred Exile, Mystic Sons and Deichman musikk, Belle Sonder are excited to start the next phase of their musical career.
