Tell us a bit about yourself? Well my full name is Gabrielle Kinney, I am from Sutton Coldfield, Birmingham. I have been singing for years but just for fun, nothing serious as I never thought about actually singing as a career. I actually wanted to be an olympic athlete when I was younger, and trained within athletics from age 10 till my 3rd year of university. It has only been in the last year or so that I have really been focusing on music and actually trying to break into the industry. Honestly I think Jorja Smith and Kehlani are two artists that really inspired me to really work hard and focus on my music career. Both are so young and so talented and Jorja Smith being from only down the road from me made me think "Why can't I do this aswell?"
There are a lot of emerging artists in the UK right now. What sets you apart from the rest? What sets me apart from the rest? Music is my life like every other artist but my life has not always been music in the sense of singing. Music got me through the years when I was an athlete. I had certain songs/playlists for particular races and training sessions, if it wasn't for music then I dont think I would have done as well within athletics. I think part of this was why I really wanted to focus on music after athletics because of how much affect it has on people and their day to day lives.
What’s your back-story? One of my songs that is now on Spotify "Take a Step" means a lot to me. I wrote it quite a few months ago now, it basically talks about getting out of the place where I am now as I have always been confused on what I am going to do with my life. Everyone I know has a job that I guess they enjoy or worked hard for and I have always seemed to want to do things that well are a lot harder to work for and as some say "unrealistic". Throughout my life I have been told that being a singer or anything in the music industry is an unrealistic goal and for years I have believed that until now. This song represents me realising that I dont want to be doing some boring old job behind a computer, I know some people may enjoy that but thats not me. I have finally found a career in which I love and have so much passion for and will stop at nothing to get where I want to be.
What are you working on at the moment? At the moment I am working on an e.p album. I have two singles out on Spotify/Apple Music and amazon at the moment. I am writing new songs all the time and I want to get this e.p out within the next few months. Hopefully after this Ill be able to perform it as many gigs in the future.
What's the first song you remember hearing? It was most likely a Beatles song, my dad loved them and would always put their album on whenever we were in the car. No joke I knew every word to most of their songs.
You're in a Karaoke Bar - What's your go to song? Hold the line - Toto for definite. I absolutely love this song and its such a great song to perform! I love it!
What was the first gig you went to? The Beatles Bootleg. - I must have been about 9/10 years old, I can just about remember It but I can assure you, I loved every second of it.
Which song do you wish you'd written? I mean if I can think of any song and to be honest this is just because its such an amazing song and well so different at all different points of the song. - Bohemian Rhapsody. Honestly I dont know how they did it and you wouldn't hear another song like it!
Which song changed your life? I guess I would say the same song that I would have loved to have written, its just an unbelievable song. To be able to write such an iconic song, I dont know anyone who doesn't know the words to Bohemian Rhapsody, I mean would you be friends with someone who didn't even like the song? No.
Which song would you like played at your funeral? "Only the good die young" Ofcourse, I dont want my funeral to be sad, I want people to be able to enjoy themselves and celebrate my life. Oh and also this song is about death so hey why not?
What song is stuck in your head right now?I am honestly listening to Kayne Wests new album "ye" - so "Yikes". - Great album
What was the first Album you bought? I am going to say it was Justin Timberlakes "Justified". My sisters used to listen to him all the time and so I fell in love with him and just had to buy his album, I mean its really his best music. I still have it somewhere, can't be throwing that out.
Which song made you want to play music? "Killing me Softly with his song" - Fugees. This was the first song I had ever performed in front of more than 5 people and it was in front of my whole school at the talent show. No one knew I could sing and yeah I just went for it and won. I loved this song so much, I think from then I knew singing was such a passion of mine.
