Matt Cross, a young singer-songwriter from Essex, is certainly one to watch over the next few months. With a brilliant debut EP under his belt and an equally catchy new single to follow, he’s fast becoming one of the most exciting new artists to be discovered.
His new song, ‘You Said You Needed Time’, is a driving little tune with some great riffs and mean guitar tones. As well as having 6 fantastic tunes, his debut EP has one of the most beautiful and unusual covers seen in a long time, by London artist Kim Bennett.
His musical style draws from a wide range of influences, as seen by his first two album purchases, Buddy Holly’s greatest hits and 50 Cents ‘Get Rich or Die Tryin'. Although his music does not explicitly pull from gangster rap, there is definitely a draw from classic 50’s songwriting. After discovering 70’s glam rock and 60’s pop music, after exclusively listening to Hip-Hop up to the age of 18, acts such as T.Rex, David Bowie, Bob Dylan and The Beatles have been a strong influence on his sound and style of writing. Not only influencing the songs melodically but also the production. He's a big fan of huge reverbs, rich strings and slap-back delay, which features heavily on his latest track.
Although Matt only picked up the guitar 2 years ago, he started writing soon after, and over this short time period he has written a vast number of songs, varying in genres. With the huge backlog of songs written, he is planning on writing for other acts.
You can check out his tracks on Soundcloud here: https://soundcloud.com/matthewcross or on any streaming platform. Both releases are also available to purchase on iTunes and Bandcamp. He’s also done a very limited run of hard copies of his Debut EP, ‘Better Late Than Never’ which you can find here: https://mattcross.bandcamp.com
With frequent plays on BBC Introducing and features on a number of blogs, his following is slowly but surely growing by the day. Matt is yet to debut his full-band live show but the announcement is eagerly anticipated.
