Liverpool neo-soul newcomer Mersey Wylie is excited to release the first single from her debut EP, The Skin I Live In. Known for her unique take on neo-soul, Wylie draws on her background in classical and jazz and infuses those influences with her love of soul. She creates every element of her music herself, from the vulnerable lyrics, to the sweeping melodies, intricate arrangements and lush harmonies, before they are brought to life by her incredible live band.

The upcoming EP explores her turbulent relationship with her mental health. Drawn from a myriad of musical influences, the EP touches on a diverse array of artists and genres across the four short tracks including Solange, Esperanza Spalding, TuneYards and Hiatus Kaiyote.

Growing up in London, Mersey Wylie was surrounded by creativity thanks to her musician father, photographer mother and the community of artists that all played their part raising her, often spending days on the sets of fashion shoots and nights in rehearsal rooms and at gigs. She was introduced to every kind of music and was instantly drawn to Motown and Michael Jackson in particular; she still vividly remembers watching him perform at Wembley when she was seven and being amazed that this giant of a performer was still just a regular sized man.

She spent her teenage years in Perth, Western Australia, and despite always having a love for singing, began to pursue classical saxophone at high school and later university - studying at the prestigious Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts. This allowed her to play in a variety of jazz and classical ensembles and she was a member of the WA Youth Jazz Orchestra for three years which cemented her love of big band music and gave her an insight into a variety of composing and orchestrating techniques that she started to draw on years later in her songwriting.

In 2010, she moved back to the UK to pursue singing and songwriting. She joined Sense of Sound choir and began working as a session musician, becoming lucky enough to perform alongside Yoko Ono, Ringo Starr, Siouxsie Sioux, Boy George and Mick Jones of the Clash in some of the most esteemed venues in the country.

In 2014 she began performing her original music that drew on her background in classical and jazz music, infused with her love of soul. She leaned into the eclecticism of her musical upbringing and education, and utilised her experiences of playing in and ultimately writing for a wide variety of ensembles, to create a sound that was truly reflective of her. She has performed at notable festivals and venues across Liverpool and the UK, and has been featured on BBC 6 Music and in Mojo Magazine.
