Tell us a bit about yourself?
Politik is a South African band based in London. Their sound is best described as alternative ethereal rock. After graduating from their music studies, the trio ventured overseas, honing their craft while travelling the coasts of Europe, Australia, Asia, the South Pacific, the Caribbean, and the American east coast. Drawing inspiration from bands like Florence + The Machine, Coldplay, Radiohead, The XX and Biffy Clyro - it was during this time that the band members found time to write their original music for Politik.
There are a lot of emerging artists in the UK right now. What sets you apart from the rest?
Politik is a female-led trio born in Cape Town, South Africa. Before writing our album we took two years out working abroad as a band and gained so much experience both musically and personally. It was these experiences that shaped our music in a unique way, where we were able to draw on so much inspiration from the people we've met from all over the world.
What’s your back-story?
Almost all the songs on the album have a story that relates to our personal and band experiences. The song that stands out the most and that has connected to fans is 'White Horses', which Nicola was moved to write after one of our colleagues committed suicide. The lyrics are an attempt to try and understand the mindset of someone in that situation and to bring attention to this subject. It isn't spoken about enough and we felt that writing this song was a way of bringing about awareness.
What are you working on at the moment?
We've only recently made the move to London and so we plan to get busy playing shows and have been writing new tracks. We hope to be showcasing these at some of our future shows.
