Super Massive is the collaboration of singer/writer Malina Hamilton-Smith and drummer/composer/producer Glenn Abbott (best known for his work in popular, platinum-selling Australian band Machine Gun Fellatio).
The pair formed Super Massive when they discovered a shared love of vintage 70’s funk and disco, and a common vision of creating a true 50/50 blend of electronic dance music and rock, influenced by a blend of classic rock bands including Led Zeppelin and ACDC and electronic bands like Depeche Mode, Basement Jaxx and Daft Punk.
Uninterested in following musical trends, the duo explore the boundaries of pop, rock, electro, dance, disco and funk, seamlessly blending multi-layered synth-scapes with full live rock instrumentation, topped off by Hamilton-Smith’s dynamic and expressive vocals.
It's intense, exhilarating and sexy electro/alternative/pop music, driven by funky dance grooves and delivered with the lustiness of a rock band.
With a bassist and guitarist joining them for live shows, Super Massive have toured Australia & Asia for five years, receiving rave reviews, hit predictions and hot ticket recommendations from metro/regional press
The band has supported legendary electro-rock band Def FX and performed at festivals such as Australia Day in The Rocks (alongside Bertie Blackman and Ash Grunwald), Surry Hills Festival and Big Sound (alongside Megan Washington) and played multiple headline festival shows in Vietnam, including Sea Festival Vietnam and the 1000th anniversary of Hanoi, to crowds of over 10,000 people.
Super Massive won a MusicOz award for Best Alternative Artist for their song “Fists In My Pocket”, whilst the song was still in demo form.
The song was later released on their debut self-titled EP. The release received rave reviews all round, with The Music Network giving "Fists" a Hit Pick prediction. The song and video have received plenty of community radio, tv and online play in Australia, NZ, the UK, US and Italy, reaching number on a number of indie charts.
The release saw Super Massive Unearthed by Triple J and featured by TimeOut Sydney as a band "On The Up". "Fists" was also voted a listener favourite on "Sounds Like Cafe".
A second single from the EP, "Late At Night", was Nokia Music Track Of The Week.
Follow up singles, "Get Me Out Of My Head", and "In The Twilight..." also enjoyed play on alternative radio and TV programs in Australia such as 4ZZZ, Outer Limits, SYN, TVS, Channel 31 and Rage.
In late 2014 the band took a break from live shows to work on writing and recording new material for their debut album release. These plans were both on hold in 2015.
In 2019 Super Massive came out of hiatus with a slamming new single, 'Meltwater', released on 30 May 2019, with a videoclip for the song released on 27 June 2019.
The band has a couple more singles lined up for release in 2019, with plans to play shows in the UK and US in 2020.
