Tell us a bit about yourself? The Paisley Daze are a groovy rock n roll band made up of musicians and artists from Asia, Europe and Africa who met in Hong Kong. We're most practically inspired by Asian artists making waves in the West like Rich Chigga and Higher Brothers, but stylistically more so by the likes of The Internet, James Brown, The Stone Roses and Mac Demarco.
There are a lot of emerging artists in the UK right now. What sets you apart from the rest? Most of us (bar our bassist) grew up and met in Hong Kong and whilst we are not geographical natives we have come to hold Hong Kong very dear to our hearts. We are examples of what are known as 3rd culture kids, where you are raised in a culture different to your parents', from the country on your passport and as a result are exposed to a variety on different cultures that all mesh into what is globally known as society.
What’s your back-story? There haven't been many (if any) expressions of 3rd culture individuals of any form never mind art, never mind rock n roll, never mind groovy rock n roll. Put this in the context of having so much (being from relatively privileged backgrounds), but having so little power culturally (Hong Kong culture is dominated by the corporate elite) and politically (see China and the Umbrella Revolution), you start to feel like something needs to change, music and art seem to be as good a way as any to begin that. At the very least as a way of trying to remedy the extreme inequality that exists in Hong Kong by giving some expression of the times back.
What are you working on at the moment? We are currently working on a project entitled 'The Daze Culture Mixtape', which we intend to use to help us get more gigs in London and eventually at festivals in the coming summer.
