A band born of frustration, The Relights began blasting away the monotony of day-to-day routines, stale hometowns and lifeless music back in early 2015. Since those early days, the band has performed across the country, winning over music lovers with their honest brand of no-nonsense rock ‘n’ roll.
Written by Daniel Todd (Guitar/vocals) and brought to life by Chris Bottazzi (Drums, backing) and Michael Beckwith (Bass), the band’s songs set life’s highs and lows to big melodies and pounding rhythms.
“The songs are very British-sounding,” says songwriter-in-chief Dan. “I think that comes from our experiences, the important places and people in our lives – as well as musical influences, of course. We proudly wear all that on our sleeves.
“They’re just honest songs, performed by real people… the ups, the downs, good times, bad times, the strengths, the flaws. That’s what it’s all about. Everyone can relate to that.”
The band has been described as having “a vibe that recalls bands such as The Charlatans and Oasis” – as well as producing “a very specific brand of British rock – the kind that sounds like it should be playing out over the end of some ironically hopeful indie drug flick”.
Having previously only captured a few tunes in demo form, first single ‘Sail On’ marked a turning point for The Relights in February 2016. Written on an old acoustic guitar in about 20 minutes before a rehearsal, Dan initially thought nothing of it – until the band smashed it out the park straight from the off.
Since then, ‘Sail On’ has become a firm live favourite with its huge, driving singalong chorus – with the track also becoming a match day favourite at Luton Town Football Club.
Second track ‘Yesterday’s Soul’ followed in June, with the band showing off their more delicate and thoughtful side. Decorated with a touch of psychedelia, the acoustic track’s heartfelt lyrics and soaring background guitars secured its popularity with both followers and radio stations alike.
Returning swiftly to their louder sound, the band are currently working on forthcoming single ‘Lucid’, which is due to be released in late autumn.
On the live circuit, the band has already turned heads at a number of venues and festivals up and down the country. From regular haunts in Luton, MK, Bedford and London, to further afield in Bournemouth, Leicester and the North, The Relights continue to make their emerging presence felt.
