Based in Brighton, UK. Thyla blend glassy distorted guitar tone with driving rhythms and lilting ethereal melodies. Front woman Millie Duthie brings crystal like beauty to Thyla's blend of dynamic alt rock. Herself, Danny Southwell, and Dan Hole met in 2015 at college, they spent most of their time there writing songs and immersing themselves in the incredible music scene down in Brighton, out most nights watching hundreds of bands and playing live. It wasn't until guitarist Mitch Duce joined that the band began to craft what we know to be Thyla today. They spent much of late 2016 creating their sound from a wealth of influences. Key reference albums include Bloc Party's 'Silent Alarm', Bombay Bicycle Club's 'I had the Blues but I Shook them Loose', and Warpaint's 'Warpaint', their music to date garners a distaste for the stale state of the industry. Thyla believe in the rawness of live performance, they are fundamentally a guitar band reimagining the greatness of the post punk, new romantic, and shoegaze era's. Think My Bloody Valentine, The Cure, Siousxie and The Banshee's, and Blondie. The band truly believe that guitar music can hit the masses.
Although there are a lot of bands out there at the moment, when it comes to successful guitar music it is very niche, boxed in and to some extent anti mainstream, Thyla really want to bridge the distinction between pop and guitars.
Singer Millie Duthie, originally born in the states, didn't come to music till she was 17, within weeks after picking up a guitar she ditched her politics degree and decided to uproot her life and move to Brighton to become a musician. The anxieties that came with this decision can be heard in the lyrics to her songs. Especially in Thyla's latest release 'Pristine Dream' where Millie sings "I will never be your pristine dream, i've tied my fate to a piece of string, and it pleases me..." The track is an anthem for the wonky left field individual who wants to break out of the mould given to them and just explore whatever avenue it is that's calling them.
Thyla will be releasing another single before 17' is up, they might even throw a christmas cover into the works, but who knows and with the new year will come a hammering of new material, with an EP on the horizon.
